As the largest employer in the district of Rottal-Inn, the Lindner Group - based in Arnstorf, Lower Bavaria - is not only well-known as an international operating construction company. Through several companies´ expansions, the family-owned company keeps causing attention, ventures into new sectors and demonstrates that a broad range of sectors can certainly go hand in hand with success. The construction business, the nursing care and hotel business will now also be joined by sustainable agriculture and forestry. Not far from the Lindner Company headquarters, the Land.Luft farmyard in Leberfing is situated on an agriculture area of about 45 hectares. The idea for this project first arose at a family celebration where organic meat, sustainability and animal welfare were discussed.

A concept with exemplary character

The inauguration of Land.Luft is definitely something special, as it represents a completely new concept, which is clearly distinguishable from other organic farms. Traditional animal husbandry of old and endangered livestock breeds, year-round free-range farming, slaughtering directly on the pasture and further processing at the on-site butchery, and subsequent sale of the goods in the farm shop – the combination of all these things outlines an innovation. The objective of the long-term project is to ensure that the concept is process-reliable and economical for the next generation.

The organic farm in Leberfing, which was ceremoniously opened on June 8, 2018, has been successfully certified as such and even surpasses the necessary requirements. 160 invited guests were enabled to gain an on-site impression what “animal welfare” means and how this is lived on this farmyard. In the opening speech, Hans Lindner described that the idea arose at a family celebration where organic meat, sustainability and animal welfare were discussed. As a follow-up to this discussion, the opportunity was taken to charge of what had been created as a vision in the minds of the Lindner family. Hubert Bittlmayer, head of the Bavarian State Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Forestry, was pleased that Lindner has taken the advantage of the excellent conditions and praised, among other things, the impeccable value-added chain with exemplary character. By telling an anecdote he recalled a past incident: the cycle is now completed between the Ministry of Agriculture and the Lindner Group, as the first project of Lindner Akustikbau GmbH, founded in 1965, was the acoustic ceiling in the agricultural vocational school in Deggendorf. Prof. Dr. Dr. habil. Manfred Gareis, chair holder of the Department of Food Safety at the LMU Munich, who supports the entire project scientifically, considers Land.Luft as a valuable pilot project in order to preserve tradition and culture in Bavaria. Mayor Ludwig Eder also voices praise, as he is very delighted about the enhancement of his community Roßbach by this model farm. After the welcoming address, the two managing directors of the Lindner Land- und Forstwirtschaft, Patrick Ossiander and Josef Straubinger, guided the visitors on a tour to the pastures with animalfriendly husbandry. “Own fields and meadows are of particular importance, because a healthy soil provides nutritious food and good feed for the animals, which in turn is a key factor for high-quality meat,” says Patrick Ossiander. He also highlighted the importance, to focus constantly the well-being of humans, animals and nature.

Lots of space for organic

The generous agriculture area provides a natural environment for 420 pigs, including 50 sows, 92 cattle of three different breeds, 23 mountain sheep and 168 chickens. Young calves and small piglets grow up here in the pastures with their conspecifics, where they can develop themselves freely and romp around. The animals are fed with organic feed that is optimised to suit their needs, and they remain with their herds several more months than it is usual in conventional livestock breed. The later slaughter procedure is implemented in a mobile slaughter trailer directly on the pasture. Consequently, the animals are slaughtered in a familiar and stress-free environment, without long transport distances. In addition, an in-house butchery is located on-site, where the animals are dissected immediately after slaughter. The fresh meat of high-quality awarded with a certified organic label and the products derived from it are available in the farm shop under the brand name “Land.Luft” as well as soon in the online shop. Furthermore, the products will be prepared on site in the restaurant to tasty dishes. The organic meat from own production is also used in the Schlossbräu Mariakirchen and the in-house canteens of the Lindner Group.
