Upcycling Architecture – Hammerbrooklyn.DigitalCampus

05.05.2021Lindner News

The Hammerbrooklyn Future Campus is currently under construction in Hamburg, Germany. Its centrepiece is the DigitalPavillon: originally designed as an US pavilion for the Expo 2015, it now provides space for new ideas on digital transformation. Lindner is jointly responsible for the interior fit-out with glazed partition systems and sustainable materials.

Research on the Future

One of the Hanseatic city's most important future projects is being built in the immediate vicinity of HafenCity: the Hammerbrooklyn.DigitalCampus. Initiators from politics, the private sector – Art-Invest Real Estate are the owner – and economics established a non-profit foundation to create a place for research, exchange and the testing of future models. The DigitalPavillon is the central hub: in addition to co-working and co-creation spaces, open "expedition rooms" as well as an auditorium and a "Townhall" with catering and event areas were created on more than 7,500 m². The Factory Berlin, "Europe's strongest innovation ecosystem", being active since 2014, were won as a partner.

Sustainable Upcycling

In addition to digitalisation, Hammerbrooklyn focuses on sustainability. That's why the architecture was based on an innovative upcycling project: the former US pavilion from Expo 2015 in Milan found a new home in Hamburg and is complemented by additional areas and levels. Recycled or recyclable materials and energy-efficient technology played a decisive role in the interior design: for example, old wooden panels from the Expo pavilion were adopted, as was the steel construction for the "expedition room" with its floating appearance. The 23-metre-long divisible meeting room is measuring over 80 m². It floats between levels 2 and 3.

Lindner Glass Partition Wall System

For the fully glazed partition walls in the expedition room as well as for other separated office and work rooms, the architects from SPINE ARCHITECTS chose the Lindner Life 125 Stereo partition wall system. With a flush glass enclosure, it fits perfectly into the overall concept in Hammerbrooklyn and meets the requirements for sound insulation, fire protection and crash safety. Furthermore, as a recyclable, Cradle to Cradle® certified system, the glass partition meets all expectations for sustainable interior design. Various drywall works as well as the installation of energy-efficient canopy ceilings and mobile partition walls were also carried out by Lindner.
