Extension of Terminal 2 at Helsinki Vantaa Airport

Helsinki Vantaa Airport (HEL), one of Northern Europe’s most important transport hubs, has undergone a comprehensive expansion of Terminal 2 to handle growing passenger numbers more efficiently and to improve processes for travellers. As part of the project, the total floor area increased by more than 45 % to approximately 250,000 m², creating additional capacity for passenger handling, waiting areas and service functions.

The expansion includes two new passenger piers, modern baggage handling systems (BHS) and additional gate areas. Increased capacities for passport control and security screening improve passenger flow. A new travel centre directly connects the airport with rail, bus and taxi services. In addition to the central departure and arrival halls, the terminal also includes customs areas and baggage reclaim facilities.

Overall planning was carried out by ALA Architects, with the project meeting the high requirements of BREEAM building certification.

Ceiling solutions for functionality and spatial impact

For the terminal 2, the Lindner Group supplied the LMD-E 200 hook-on ceiling system with perforated metal ceiling panels and integrated luminaire frames. The white metal ceilings support the open, light-filled architecture of the terminal areas and structure the expansive spaces with a calm, uniform ceiling appearance.

The perforation of the ceiling panels enhances room acoustics in the highly frequented airport areas, thereby reducing noise levels for passengers and staff. The integrated luminaire frames allow for flush installation and ensure a uniform, clear lighting effect.
