Through an extensive renovation, the former k.u.k. Central Post Office in the heart of Vienna has been transformed into a multifunctional centre where past and present meet. Spanning an impressive gross floor area of 49,800 m², the listed building now accommodates rental apartments, modern office spaces, a hotel, and a public restaurant in the Dominikanerhof courtyard. Additionally, the basement houses a contemporary fitness studio and a spacious underground car park with 160 parking spaces.
During the refurbishment of the existing structure, Lindner GmbH faced the challenge of preserving the building’s historical essence while meeting the demands of the 21st century. The characteristic wooden beams in the attic, as well as the original stone ceilings and brick walls, were retained, creating an authentically historic atmosphere enhanced by floor-to-ceiling windows.
The extensive use of flexible drywall solutions and partition walls enabled the creation of contemporary spaces that seamlessly integrate into the overall design without compromising the historic fabric of the building. In two rental units, Lindner GmbH was able to install high-quality Lindner Life Clear glass partitions as well as wooden and steel frame doors. These elements were specifically used to design modern office and meeting spaces, combining transparency with functionality at a high architectural standard. Acoustically effective cladding on the walls optimises sound insulation, while Plafotherm® GK HEKDA® heated and chilled ceilings ensure a pleasant indoor climate in selected areas.
For the flooring, the Lindner Group opted for the raised-floor system FLOOR and more®. The calcium sulphate floor panels not only offer high fire and smoke protection but also allow the discreet integration of technical installations and cable routes. Additionally, LIGNA raised floor panels made from engineered wood were used, distinguished by their stability and ease of installation. Classified in the lowest emissions class (E1), LIGNA raised floor panels meet the highest standards for environmentally sustainable, pollutant-free construction and contribute to a healthy work environment.
