In one of Vienna’s most striking revitalisation projects, the Lindner Group has breathed new life into the former Imperial and Royal Main Post Office in the first district. Covering approximately 67,700 m² of gross floor area, the listed building now combines rental apartments, modern office space, a hotel, and a public restaurant in the Dominikanerhof.
The central challenge of the project lay in reconciling heritage protection with contemporary interior fit-out standards. Characteristic elements of the original building – including the timber beams in the attic, the original stone ceilings and brick walls – were fully preserved. Complemented by large windows that flood the building with natural daylight, a distinctive atmosphere rich in history has been created.
To avoid impacting this historic fabric, Lindner relied on flexible drywall solutions and system partition walls to create functional, modern spaces that integrate seamlessly into the existing spatial structure.
In two rental areas, high-quality Lindner Life Clear glass partitions were installed alongside timber and steel-framed doors. These elements clearly structure modern office and meeting spaces with a sophisticated design approach, combining transparency with functionality. In addition, acoustically effective wall linings enhance sound insulation and contribute to a calm working and living environment.
In selected areas, Plafotherm® GK HEKDA® heated and chilled ceilings ensure a comfortable indoor climate. The system regulates temperature through radiant heat transfer, operating in a particularly energy-efficient and low-noise manner – ideal for a building that demands the highest standards of comfort while remaining compatible with its listed status.
For the floor construction, the FLOOR and more® dry hollow floor system with calcium sulphate panels was used. It provides high fire and smoke protection while allowing for the discreet integration of technical installations and cable routing beneath the floor panels – without interfering with the historic structure. In addition, LIGNA raised floor panels made of engineered wood were installed, noted for their stability and ease of handling. Classified in the lowest emission class (E1), LIGNA panels meet the highest standards of environmentally responsible construction and contribute to a healthy indoor environment.
