Following an extensive revitalisation, the listed Jesuit Refectory at Rosenhain in Graz has now reopened, having been refurbished in strict compliance with heritage conservation requirements.
From monastery to modern institute building
The former monastery building dating back to the 17th century is now home to the Institute of Movement Sciences, Sport and Health at the University of Graz. On a usable floor area of around 1,800 m², contemporary workplaces, seminar rooms, a lecture hall and multifunctional event spaces were created. The aim of the refurbishment was to establish an inspiring environment for research, teaching and interdisciplinary exchange, thereby sustainably strengthening both the university infrastructure and the educational landscape of the city of Graz. Parts of the historic vaulted ceilings were preserved and carefully complemented with durable, environmentally friendly materials.
Stable tiered seating structure using raised access floors
The Lindner Group contributed to the design of the lecture hall architecture, with a particular focus on the construction of a new tiered seating system. This was fully realised using the FLOOR and more® arena raised floor system. The high degree of prefabrication enabled rapid installation, while the robust floor elements provide the required structural stability as well as enhanced fire safety. The tiered seating was complemented by integrated swirl diffusers in the steps, ensuring a pleasant indoor climate within the lecture hall.
Thanks to the close cooperation of all project partners, precise coordination with the heritage authorities and a construction approach focused on the sustainable preservation of the existing building, the result successfully combines historic fabric with modern functionality. The University of Graz has thus gained a forward-looking space for learning and interaction that harmoniously unites tradition with contemporary technology.
